Cyrano

Director’s Note

Where do I start?

I have waited months for the chance to share this beautiful production with you all. I don’t think there’s a story we need more right now than the story of Cyrano De Bergerac. This adaptation written and devised by Max Tachis, Jeffrey Lo, and Maria Marquis takes the classic tale by Edmond Rostand and gives it a unique twist, where instead of Cyrano’s nose being what holds the character back from going after what they want, it’s her gender.

Yes, if you didn’t grasp from our marketing materials just yet our Cyrano is a woman and this story is a queer one set in the turbulent period of the 1970s. While I was reading this script, I kept picturing this story and these characters living and experiencing their lives in a time of great change, a time of activism and protest, and a time of people starting to truly find their voice and use it despite the push back from their government. So it felt natural to set the play in the tension-filled era of the 1970s, when people were pushing back against the censorship of their words while carrying the weight of their nation’s expectations—an era that sharply questioned what it means to be a “man” or a “woman,” and what it means to defy those roles in a world on the cusp of a great change.

The majority of my inspiration for this production came from the movie Across The Universe, a movie musical using Beatles music to tell the stories of these young adults finding themselves in a world of great divide in the middle of the Vietnam War, and yet still choosing to love despite it all. Cyrano is a play filled with heart, risk, and tragedy. I hope this story and these characters resonate with you. And most importantly, I hope you walk away from this show with the confidence to live your life as your true self.

As a recently come out lesbian, this show is my love letter to other closeted or questioning lesbians, reminding you that it is never too late to start living your life as who you truly are.
